Figs
Description and features
The fruit, which from a botanical point of view is an infructescence composed of numerous small achenes, is succulent and has a characteristic sweet flavour.
The fig is widespread throughout the Mediterranean basin and in Asia Minor. From Turkey to Egypt, from Morocco to Portugal. In Italy it prefers the warm or temperate climates of the southern regions, but it can grow anywhere, as long as it needs lots of sun and shelter from frost.
Figs are rich in potassium and also contain, albeit in small quantities, phosphorus and vitamins A and C. However, they contain a lot of sugar and calories, qualities that once made them precious for giving strength and nourishment.
